A 1990s lake community above the Bow River valley
Chaparral was established in 1995, and its residents' association a year earlier, in 1994. The community stretches from Macleod Trail east to the Bow River valley, and it is informally known in three parts: Lake Chaparral, Chaparral Valley and Chaparral Ridge.
The lake and its park are private. The Lake Chaparral Residents Association states that membership is restricted to Lake Chaparral residents and is mandatory, with annual fees registered as an encumbrance on each property's title. Not every Chaparral address is part of the lake association, so it is worth confirming for a specific home. Members have beaches, boat rentals, fishing from the designated shoreline, courts, playgrounds and winter skating. Gas motors are not allowed on the lake, and swimming is unsupervised.
Most homes are detached houses from the mid-1990s onward, with a smaller number of semi-detached homes, townhouses and condominiums. Stoney Trail and Macleod Trail provide road connections, and bus routes link the community to the south end of the Red Line.
