Hopewell Residential launched Mahogany in the fall of 2008. Its lake covers 63 acres, with 21 acres of beach, and the developer describes it as the largest freshwater lake in Calgary. Two residential islands sit in the lake, and residents have two private beaches: West Beach, with a fishing pier and playground, and Central Beach, home to the Mahogany Beach Club.
The lake, beaches and clubhouse are maintained by the Mahogany Homeowners Association. According to the association, every Mahogany property title carries an annual encumbrance fee that supports the shared beaches, lake, clubhouse and parks. Motorized watercraft are not allowed; residents swim, canoe, kayak and use pedal boats in summer, and skate and play hockey in winter.
Housing is newer and varied, with low-rise condominiums, townhouses, duplexes and detached homes, most built in the last decade. Westman Village, a mixed-use area with condominiums, shops and restaurants, is part of the community, and the South Health Campus is a short drive away in Seton.
